The 4th-generation Sierra 3500HD had two different engines: a 6.0L Vortec 6000 V8 or a 6.6L Duramax V8 turbodiesel. The 6.0L Vortec 6000 V8 produced 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the model year, the Sierra 3500HD had one of two different Duramax engines. The older 6.6L LML Duramax V8 turbodiesel (2015-2016) produced 397 horsepower and 765 lb-ft of torque. The newer 6.6L L5P Duramax V8 turbodiesel (2017-2019) produced 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, a drastic improvement over the older one.
The 5th-generation Sierra 3500HD series currently comes with one of two engines: a new 6.6L L8T V8 and a 6.6L Duramax V8 turbodiesel. The new 6.6L L8T V8 produces 401 horses and 464 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 40 horsepower and 80+ lb-ft of torque. The 6.6L L5P Duramax V8 turbodiesel is the same engine from the 2017-2019 models, producing 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. However, towing capacity has risen from the previous generation. A 2021 Sierra 3500HD can tow up to 36,000 lbs.
